If you're buying a ring as a surprise, the averages are a useful fallback — but a quick measurement is always better.
"Average" ring size is the band most often sold, not a size that fits everyone — fingers vary widely with height, build and which finger you mean. Use the averages only as a starting guess; if you can measure, do. A ring's size is set by the inner diameter (and circumference) of the band, so a borrowed ring you can measure beats any estimate.
